Sonny Lubick

Sonny-Lubick.jpg

Sonny Lubick first came to Colorado State University in 1982 as the offensive coordinator for Leon Fuller’s original coaching staff. Following highly successful assistant coaching stints at Stanford (1985-1988) and Miami (1989-1992), Lubick returned to become the head coach of the Rams in 1993. His success is among the greatest of any head football coach in school history, winning six conference championships and taking nine of his 15 teams to bowl games. During his career, Lubick produced five All-Americans and seven academic All-Americans along with 61 first-team all-conference players and 112 academic all-conference players.

Over the 15 seasons he coached the Rams, Lubick’s record of 108-74 made him the second-winningest coach in school history behind Harry Hughes. Three of his teams finished the season in the top 25 (1994, 1997 and 2000), and he was named the conference coach of the year in 1994, 1997, 1999 and 2000. In 1994, Sports Illustrated named him the National Coach of the Year.

Under Lubick’s tenure, CSU built the McGraw Athletic Center and renovated Moby Arena, and Hughes Stadium received its largest update and expansion in its history. The field at the stadium was re-named in his honor as Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium. When Lubick left after the 2007 season, he had produced more than 40 NFL players. When CSU’s new campus football stadium opened in 2017, an anonymous donation was made to name the field at Canvas Stadium after him.
