About

Dr. John R. Macdonald is an Associate Professor in the Department of Management at Colorado State University, and Fulbright Scholar to the Universitas Pelita Harapan in Tangerang, Indonesia (2023). His teaching interests include transportation, warehousing, logistics, and supply chain management. His primary research interests include risk/disruptions/resilience in the supply chain, behavioral supply chain management, sustainability, and minor areas including supply chain strategy, issues in transportation, and strategies for third-party logistics providers.

John received his Ph.D. in Logistics and Transportation from the University of Maryland – College Park. There he majored in Logistics and minored in Operations Management. He holds Bachelor of Science degrees in Transportation and Logistics as well as Management Information Systems; both from Iowa State University.  Prior to earning his doctorate, he worked for UTi Worldwide Group as a consultant in strategic supply chain network design as well as a Supply Chain Solutions Architect in the Asia/Pacific region based in Singapore. He has also held managerial and analyst positions at Naigai Nitto in Singapore, Allied Van Lines, Union Pacific Railroad, Ruan Transportation, and J.M. Swank (ConAgra).

John has published work in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Journal of Business Logistics, Journal of Operations Management, Decision Sciences Journal, Transportation Journal, Omega, International Journal of Production Research, Big Earth Data, Operations Management Research, and others. His academic case studies have been published through the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP). He is an active speaker for companies and at conferences including the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals and others.
