J. Doug Morton has long had a passion for sports and retail; his career spanned nearly 40 years in the sporting goods retail business.
From 1995 until his retirement in 2009 he was chairman and CEO of The Sports Authority. During that time, he led the company through a period of dramatic growth reaching $2.7 billion in domestic sales with nearly 400 brick and mortar stores and a fast growing internet business. The company also operated an 80-store joint venture with stores in both Japan and China.
During his tenure as CEO, the company traded on both NASDAC and NYSE. In 2005, Morton and his management led a private transaction with Leonard Green and Partners of Los Angeles.
Morton serves on the Board of The Sports Authority and the National Sports Center for the Disabled. He and his wife live in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, and travel extensively. Morton is an alumnus of Westminster College of Salt Lake City where he served on the school’s Board of Trustees for five years.
