Tianyang Wang (Tian) is a Professor of Finance at Colorado State University. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. Additionally, Tian holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation, is a certified Financial Risk Manager (FRM) through the Global Association of Risk Professionals, and is an Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA).

Tian’s research spans both theoretical developments and empirical applications, primarily in asset pricing and derivatives, behavioral finance, FinTech, sustainability and commodities, and financial risk management. His work has been published in journals such as Operations Research, Production and Operations Management, Journal of Financial Research, Journal of Empirical Finance, Journal of International Money and Finance, Quantitative Finance, Journal of Risk and Insurance, Risk Analysis, Financial Review, Journal of Futures Markets, and Energy Economics, among others. 

Tian has earned numerous best paper awards and honors, including the Outstanding Research Article Award from the Journal of Financial Research, the Academic Research Colloquium Best Paper Award from the CFP Board Center for Financial Planning, the First Prize Research Article Award at China Financial Engineering Annual Meeting, the Best Paper Award at China Center for Insurance and Social Security Research, the Best Paper Award at Annual Conference of Taiwan Risk Insurance Association, and the Dean’s Scholars recognition.

Tian's research has received support from the Center for Petroleum Asset Risk Management at the University of Texas at Austin, the Enterprise Research Program at Colorado State University, the Society of Actuaries, and the Casualty Actuarial Society. He is honored to have participated in research supported by the Department of Energy, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Intel, and grants from the Natural Science Foundation of China. He has been featured in media outlets such as the Financial Times, Market Watch, Economic Watch, Caixin Global, Global Association of Risk Professionals, Society of Actuaries, Insurance Weekly News, and the College of Business Research Vault.

Tian has been an invited speaker, session chair, and discussant at international and regional conferences. He has actively served on several research and program committees of major academic and professional societies, including the Financial Management Association, Southern Finance Association, American Risk and Insurance Association, J.P. Morgan International Commodities Symposium, China International Risk Forum, and the Society of Actuaries, to foster the development of a vibrant research community. Tian holds several editorial positions: he is the Guest Editor for the "Frontiers in Quantitative Finance and Risk Management" special issue in the Risks journal, Co-Editor of Expanding Horizon and Contributing Editor of the Actuary at the Society of Actuaries, Associate Editor for China Finance Review International, and a board member for the Journal of Economics and Finance.

Tian teaches in undergraduate, graduate, online MBA, and EMBA programs. He truly loves teaching and sincerely cares about our students. He finds teaching to be a challenging, inspirational and rewarding experience. In his classes, Tian fosters a stimulating learning environment and bridges rigorous financial analysis with real-world investment scenarios. He is deeply honored to be the recipient of the Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative Fellowship, the Business Tinberg Teaching Innovation Grant, the Sustainability Curriculum Innovation Award, and the Cyber Center Grant at Colorado State University, as well as the Fred Moore Teaching Excellence Award at the University of Texas at Austin. He has also been nominated for the Best Teacher Award, the Beta Gamma Sigma Most Influential Professor, and as a faculty member recognized for making a positive impact on students’ experiences at Colorado State University. Furthermore, under the guidance of the Faculty Institute for Inclusive Excellence, Tian has been selected as a Faculty Fellow for Inclusive Excellence, and as a board member of the Multicultural Staff and Faculty Council at Colorado State University.
