Chair's Message

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the Department of Finance and Real Estate in the College of Business at Colorado State University! Our goal is to be recognized as one of the leading undergraduate and master’s granting academic departments among U.S. public universities. To this end, we are committed to pursuing excellence in teaching and research, and fostering strong ties with the business community.

Our Department offers high quality academic programs in both finance and real estate. Students in the undergraduate program are exposed to a broad variety of foundational courses in finance and can choose among advanced tracks in the areas of corporate finance, investments, financial planning and real estate.

Our curriculum equips students with the knowledge required to earn distinguished professional designations such as the Certified Financial Planner (CFP®), Charter Financial Analyst Charter (CFA®), and the Financial Risk Manager (FRM®). Our curriculum also is recognized by the CFA Institute and by the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP). We have state-of-the-art instructional facilities, including a sophisticated financial lab, with access Bloomberg® terminals and other technology.

Students in our specialized master’s program in Financial Risk Management develop advanced quantitative and analytical skills that are applicable to portfolio management, corporate risk management, and energy risk management.

The learning environment in the Department is designed to produce students with the knowledge base, confidence, and ethical foundation to succeed in business and be responsible stewards of social trust. Our rigorous academic programs include important experiential learning components, such as internships, interaction with industry professionals through our advisory board, and venues such as our student managed investment fund (Summit Fund), in which select students gain experience in portfolio management and investment analysis by managing nearly $1 million in real funds.

The Department is also proud to host the Everitt Real Estate Center, which provides valuable service to the real estate community. The Center conducts several faculty-student collaborated research projects and is responsible for producing the widely acclaimed Northern Colorado residential price index.

A key component of our mission is our dedicated group of faculty and staff. Our faculty are diverse in their interests but share a passion for teaching and have been recognized with numerous teaching awards. Importantly, our faculty are informed by their research, which drives continuous professional development and is a constant source for new perspectives that ultimately improve the classroom experience. They have published their research in the most distinguished academic journals, including the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Money, Credit and Banking, Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of Risk and Insurance and Operations Research among many others. In support of our high emphasis on knowledge discovery, the Department conducts an active research seminar series that allows participants to interact and learn from leaders in the discipline.

Judging by the pursuits of our graduates, our programs have been very successful, as our graduates are employed in Fortune 500 firms, major investment banks and investment management firms, earn rigorous professional designations, and some gain entry to ultra-competitive master’s and Ph.D. programs at top institutions.

We invite you to explore the opportunities in the Department of Finance and Real Estate. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

John Elder
